What to do or visit in the Basque Country?

The northern Basque Country (Iparralde) on the French side, stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pyrenees mountains. It offers different and varied landscapes with activities for all tastes.

Each town or village in the Basque Country has its own charm and particularities.
 

Saint Jean Pied de Port and its surroundings

The city is located in the heart of the Basque Country, in the Pays de Cize, Saint Jean Pied de Port is called Donibane Garazi in Basque, it is the capital of Lower Navarre, one of the seven Basque provinces.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is also a major stage of the pilgrimage to Compostela and the last stage before crossing the Pyrenees leading to Roncesvalles.

The city is dominated by its Citadel which stands atop the hill of Mendiguren. It was built around 1625-1627. It is a rare example of bastioned fortification as conceived by Vauban's precursor engineers.From the castle of the Kings of Navarre to the citadel rebuilt by Vauban, you can discover the strategic role of this stronghold.

The Iraty forest: (about 30 km away)

It is the largest beech grove in Europe. It has managed to preserve a remarkable fauna and flora.

In winter, the resort of Iraty welcomes you to its cross-country ski or snowshoe trails. The rest of the year you can go hiking on marked and marked trails and GR®10 routes. Others will prefer to fish, go horseback riding or watch the migration of birds

The surrounding villages

We advise you to get lost, on foot or by bike, in the surrounding villages. You will be able to discover a green countryside, authentic houses and farms.


The Basque Coast

The village of Uhart Cize is located about 50 minutes by car from Bayonne/Anglet/Biarritz.

You have chosen to visit the Basque Country being based in the interior, you can also go for the day to the Basque Coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches that await you.

You will find from Anglet to Hendaye many surf schools all along the coast and also various nautical activities such as paddle, sailing and scuba diving.

Do you prefer dry land? Anglet, Arcangues, Bassusssary, Biarritz, Ciboure and Saint-Jean-de Luz offer you a variety of different landscapes on their golf courses .

If the visit and the history have a place of choice during your holidays, you can stroll and visit Bayonne and its alleys , rave about the beautiful residences of Biarritz or those of Saint Jean de Luz. These are only the largest cities, but other places such as Bidart, Guéthary, Ascain, Espelette… and many more will seduce you with their authenticity and beauty.
